Halkidiki is a large mainland region of northern Greece, which is famous for its shape, as it has three peninsulas or ‘legs’ as they are better known. From west to east they are Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. They used to be called ‘popular’ Kassandra, ‘peaceful’ Sithonia and ‘spiritual’ Athos, but they have all changed so much in recent years, they all offer a bit of everything.
The great thing about this region is that due to its geographical lay-out there is the main body of land and then the 3 legs, but they all have different terrains and atmospheres. It is sometimes said to be a ’mainland’ and 3 Islands, but actually they are all connected, especially through a system of excellent roads. Therefore, it is very popular for Fly-Drive Holidays and visitors from the rest of mainland Europe. (and closest to Thessaloniki, which is the 2nd biggest city in Greece and has a major International Airport
Kassandra, ‘the first leg’, was once known as being a resort destination for western Europeans, due the many spectacular beaches it has, but this has changed, due to the increased popularity in cultural, creative and historical tourism.
A couple popular places to visit are Nea Fokea and Afytos, which are situated in the northern region of the peninsula, but there are many in the southern part too. Nea Fokea and surrounding region has some interesting sites, which include Sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, Byzantine Tower of St Paul and Crypt of Apostle Paul. The crypt is a great little adventure, as you must crawl down the narrow tunnel, which was the Apostles hiding place, to gain access to a small alter area and natural spring, which is used as holy water.
A nearby local village square is a lovely looking area with traditional buildings, monuments and restaurants. One restaurant positioned in the corner of the square, which is called Masalia, is extremely popular and has been for many years. It grows some of its own food and sources the rest from local suppliers, so it really is a taste of the regional cuisine.
Aftos is a very popular area for tourists, due to the houses, shops and restaurants being ‘protected’, for their traditional design. This area is not allowed to be increased in size and all building are closely monitored to ensure they retain their authentic appearance and atmosphere. This extends to the edge of ‘the rock’ as it is known, where there is a promenade full of restaurants bars and shops. This cliff-top walkway has stunning views of the Toroneos Gulf and provides breath-taking sun-sets, so has become an extremely famous and popular visitor destination for visitors from near and far.
There are many options for accommodation, but one of the best hotels in the region is the Blue Bay Hotel, with its; pool, spa, balconies with sea views, high quality rooms, excellent restaurant and top-class customer service.
This region is growing as a Wedding Destination, as it has stunning views, brilliant beaches, perfect weather, quality food and drink. The Kassandra Municipality are actively helping this increase by assisting with all the necessary official parts of the arrangements. They are doing is in a very friendly and professional way, which lets the couple get on and enjoy the rest of the organisation of their special day. The Municipality of Kassandra and its tourism department – Visit Kassandra – are always looking for collaboration and investment from organisations worldwide.
The Halkidiki Tourism Organisation is a professional and pro-active department and are open to work with any organisation to collaborate in any form of partnership to promote the region.
