Tenerife is an Island in the Canaries, which is actually Spanish, but is located off the west coast of Africa. There are 7 islands that make-up the Canaries and Tenerife is the biggest.
There are several popular destination on Tenerife, two being Playa De Las Americas and Los Cristianos, which are both in the south of the island. As this region has grown in popularity, the two destinations have virtually merged into one another, connected by a delightful waterfront boulevard, which runs the length of both.
Puerto Colon is a lovely port/harbour area, which has many; bars, restaurants and shops plus an adjacent beach area too.
Not far from this port in Costa Adeje is the Aqua Land and Siam Park, which is a fun day out for all the family!
Mount Teide dominates the sky line, which you would expect from a 12,198 ft high Volcano.The region at its base is spectacular and has been used for many movies, as it has a ‘moon surface appearance’. There is also a cable car to its peak, which gives access to unbelievable views of the Canary Islands Region.
The beach and harbor area in Los Cristianos is extensive and provides all the activities you would expect from a beach resort. It also has boat trips to the other Islands, plus Whale and Dolphin Watching Tours.
The closest Island to Tenerife is La Gomera which has a National Park, Cave Farmers and spectacular views, plus much more. It is a boat trip away, but well worth it, especially as you can do a bit of Dolphin and Flying Fish spotting on the way, which is a common site!
Masca is quaint little village, which is accessed via a very steep road, leading down through the valley. Stories say that after one of the major volcanic eruptions on the Island, it is believed to have been swept into the sea, but decades later, a sheep farmer stumbled upon it again.
Candelaria is famous for its beach side Guanche Statues and Basilica, home of the Virgin of Candelaria. It has a delightful square with many souvenir shops and cafes nearby to relax in, but the most popular place is the Cake Shop, a must for visitors with a sweet tooth.
Santa Cruz is the Capital and important to for commercial, government and business matters. The Loro Park is close to Puerto de la Cruz which is a very popular destination, especially for families. It has a variety of birds and animals, plus the main attraction; a Dolphin Show, where kids can actually take part in.
Tenerife has reinvented itself in the last decade and is a far more cultural and exciting destination to visit! Once just a ‘beach and beer resort’ with ‘Veronica’s’ being party central, it has taken advantage of its natural scenery and beauty to create and enhance a number of activities!
